          Climate Reaction workshop in Macedonia

          From 21 - 23 June 2011, the National and regional climate change adaptation, climate challenges and response policy priorities workshop was held in the premises of the Macedonian Red Cross.

          The main objective of this gathering, attended by 17 CSO representatives from all over Macedonia, was to officially establish the Macedonian Climate Reaction Network along with the development of joint priorities and policies regarding specific topics on climate change.

          The workshop was opened by the Macedonian Red Cross team and provided guidelines regarding the aim of the workshop as well as the undertaken project activities until the time being.

          In line with Macedonian Red Cross plan of action, the project coordinator presented recent actions undertaken by Macedonian Red Cross in the area of Disaster Preparedness and Response and the effects and consequences of climate change and natural disasters.

          The representative from the Public Health Institute held a presentation on the risks of climate changes regarding health and the national advisor on climate change presented six scenarios for climate change in the Republic of Macedonia. This presentation was followed by an input on UNDP initiatives in the area of climate change. Further the project manager of the Austrian Red Cross shared experiences of existingnetworks on climate change in Germany and Austria, in particular with regard to the implementation of climate change adaptation activities.

          Following these presentations, participants jointly developed 5 prioritiesin the fieldof climatechange thatwill be treated during the next two years:

          1. Health
          2. Agriculture
          3. Disaster Preparedness and Response
          4. Water
          5. Energy

          For each priority, the network proposed different activities that willcontribute tosuccessfulproject implementation.

          On this occasion a signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding, providing the legal framework, mission and tasks of the Climate Reaction Network,was held.
